The Keystone Natural Beef story begins with Billy’s great-great-grandfather, John Hagelstein, who first registered the Keystone brand in the early 1900s. For over a century, our family has been committed to ranching, with a deep respect for the land, animals, and community. Raised on a ranch in Klamath County, Billy grew up immersed in the daily rhythms of ranch life, learning the values of hard work, tenacity, and responsibility from an early age.
Billy’s childhood memories are filled with moments that shaped his approach to ranching today—whether it was riding alongside his mom on horseback, helping his dad and older brother build corrals, or steering the pickup while feeding cattle. By age 10, Billy was already showing cattle and earning accolades in 4-H and FFA programs, where he developed skills in animal care, nutrition, and record-keeping. These formative experiences instilled a deep respect for the animals and a drive to ensure every step of the ranching process is done with integrity.
